What is Green Goo?

Green Goo is a phenomena sometimes encountered in Electrical Installations dating back to the late 1960’s to early 1970’s, where the original PVC cables have been used.

Green slime or Green Goo is the product of a reaction between decomposing plasticiser and the copper conductors of PVC cables. It is generally a slow process, however high temperatures can accelerate the process.

Where an installation is seriously affected and there is a breakdown of cable, then a re-wire is required. If however it is considered a re-wire is not required, we would strongly advise frequent electrical checks, visual inspections, cleaning or replacement of the accessories and an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) testing 100% of the circuits be carried out.
